Municipality of CERVIA

Cervia is located in the Emilia-Romagna Region, along a beautiful part of the Adriatic Coast, 20 km south of Ravenna, on a 9,200 m shore characterised by fine sand and shallow waters. This ancient salt-producing city is a famous tourist destination. The balance between environment and local development, based on the protection of natural areas, render Cervia with the other seaside resort Milano Marittima, Pinarella and Tagliata a point of reference for tourism at national and international level and typical seaside resort for families, so hotels and beaches are equipped to best accommodate children of all ages. The quality of environment and tourist services won the Municipality of Cervia the prestigious environmental certifications EMAS and ISO 14001, 27 Blue Flags, 24 in successive years (since 1999), many environmental awards as well as the “Green Flag – Child-friendly beach”, to indicate a seaside resort with characteristics suitable for children, selected through a survey conducted by a pool of 2,550 Italian and European pediatricians.

Particular attention is given to the composition of the sand which must be fine and must slope gently into the sea, characterized by shallow waters and clear, clean waters. Furthermore, a team of rescuers and lifeguards must always be present on the beach in case of emergencies.

A “green flag” location, in addition to the beach, must also have several facilities designed
for the family: restaurants, pizzerias, ice cream parlors and playgrounds for the
entertainment of children and adults. Therefore also services and comforts for parents,
because, say the pediatricians: “When the parents are well, the children are also well”. The
indication of the commission that awarded the recognition was therefore to prefer
equipped locations, where parents can relax, play sports, meet friends or have an aperitif
while the children are “safe”, busy between playgrounds and ad hoc equipment in
complete safety.

Cervia is particularly reach of natural, cultural and traditional heritage:
Magazzini del Sale (Salt Storehouses) dating back to the 18th century, Porto canale (the
Canal Harbour) Borgo Marina (the Fishermen’s Neighbourhood) and the Salina of Cervia,
a 827 ha of natural oasis, is part of the Po Delta Park able to offer guided tours on foot, by
bike and by electric boat and bird watching for children and families.
In Cervia there are also curious museums, where children can learn while having fun. In
MUSA, the salt museum, in addition to the many curiosities of a world of the past, there is
the possibility of seeing the salt workers at work in the old salt pan and understanding with
them how salt is produced and collected.
The historical pinewood hosts the Spas and the Butterflies House, a large greenhouse of
over 500 square meters, near the 27 ha of Natural Park.
At the Natural Park, children can come into direct contact with the typical animals of the
area such as cows, peacocks, goats, ducks, swans, hens, and can see fallow deer and deer,

symbols of the city. Several animals are free, such as rabbits that can be approached with
gentleness and trust. In this area CerviaAvventura offers the thrill of paths suspended
among the pine trees to be experienced in complete safety.

Inside the pinewood of Pinarella-Tagliata (24 ha) there is the slow park “Park of the
natural rights of boys and girls”. The park is designed to be traveled by bicycle, on foot or
by running, but it can also simply be a frame to reflect, slowly observing the rhythms of
nature.
There is also plenty of space for “budding sportsmen” with swimming, sailing, surfing,
horse racing and tennis schools, which take place throughout the territory. You can go
canoeing along the canals that cross the pine forest and get practically everywhere by
bicycle. Skating and BMX or skate-board rinks are located in different points of the city
Mirabilandia https://www.mirabilandia.it/, a huge park with new attractions every year,
offers days of unbridled fun with games, exhibitions and shows suitable for all ages, and
for parents who don’t want to follow their children Mirabilandia Beach is the ideal place to
wait, where you certainly can’t get bored with the numerous swimming pools and water
games.

IMPLEMENTED PILOT ACTIVITIES

WONDER PROJECT

In Cervia we completed the “Slow Park – park for natural rights of boys and girls”, by the
implementation of 3 new installations in according with the other six already present in
the park, inspired by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and Adolescent and by
the manifesto of the natural rights of girls and boys by Gianfranco Zavalloni. It is a path
developed inside the pinewood of Pinarella-Tagliata, organized in thematic stations,
connected to each other also thanks to the help of specific explanatory signs of the
project and use of the stations themselves. In this way, the path can be enjoyed both
freely, with a self-managed visit, and in a collective way through organized didactic-
laboratory activities aimed at i.e. to schools. A certainly significant attraction for
families, who can let their children rest and have fun in a free and creative context, with
special games that stimulate the observation of nature, to savor its scents, to listen to its
sounds. Here one experiences rest and active leisure, by bicycle or on a walk, an ideal
place, symbol of a place that looks to the future, where the quality of life of its
inhabitants and guests is a fundamental asset.
