In the shelter of seven hills and surrounded by the emerald river Krka, people found their home more than 2000 years ago in the heart of Dolenjska region. The settlement expanded and became a town in 1365, originally called Rudolfswerth, and today known as Novo mesto. It is also called the city of situlas, because it is home to the European archaeological site of Kapiteljske njive, with the largest number of Iron Age bronze situlas ever discovered. The situla and other remarkable finds from the Iron Age are now on display in the Dolenjska Museum located in the Old Town. The core of the Old Town is the renovated Main Square with its town hall and arcades (under which you’ll find cosy cafés and local shops), Kette’s fountain and a maquette of the city of Novo mesto made of bronze.
Development centre Novo mesto

The old town centre is surrounded by the river Krka, and the best way to experience it, is a stroll along the Župančič avenue or a raft trip down the Krka River, which rewards the visitor the most famous and picturesque Novo mesto viewpoint: Breg Street with its tiny houses on the overlook above the river. The magnificent Kette’s avenue, one of the longest in Slovenia, with its mighty wild chestnut trees, leads the walker to the top of the Marof, another well-known lookout point with a beautiful view of the city centre. For stunning views from the higher perspective, we recommend a little hike to the nearby vineyard hill- Trška Gora surrounded by vineyards and its cottages, or even higher to the mythical Gorjanci, a wide mountain range shared with neighbouring Croatia. Nature lovers are also invited to explore the Kočevski Rog and bear tracks, while adrenaline enthusiasts can enjoy the Otočec Adventure Park. Otočec is best known for its water castle, the only one in Slovenia. Through the description you could get the feeling that the Water is particularly precious in these parts, integrated into the daily lives of local people. In addition to the beautiful views, it also pampers with thermal springs in the nearby health resorts of Dolenjske and Šmarješke Toplice.
RUDI POTEPUŠKI FESTIVAL
The Rudi Potepuški Festival (street art festival) takes place in early July and is suitable for all generations. During the day, there are workshops for children, which are also largely attended by adults. In the afternoon and evening, the Main Square is occupied by street artists from Slovenia and abroad. The organizer, publishing house Goga, has joined the Ana Desetnica project (Ljubljana Street Theater Festival), which is being performed by the Ana Monro Theater, and is now performing part of the performances in Novo mesto as part of the Rudi Potepuški Festival. Performances always have quality content and an intriguing story. The festival is in its nature intended for children, yet every year it attracts older audience – the organizers strive to make the festival suitable for all generations. Part of the program are also music concerts for children and circus workshops for children led by the organization Cirkuskrog.

IMPLEMENTED PILOT ACTIVITIES

In Novo mesto they created a WONDER interactive playground in the Portoval area. Close by, there is a parking lot for motorhomes and other sports infrastructure such as tennis courts, football field, pump track and restaurants.
The playground includes five playground activities for developing children’s motor skills, bicycle stands, visitor counter, information board and we designed a child friendly map with marked child friendly points for tourists.
