Elbasan City

You know where Elbasan is, but we invite you to discover its treasures.Do you know why I say there are treasures?! It is an ancient city, there are many written stories but also many that are told as legends. All speak of early developments, traditions and culture. Do we see together one of the countries that preserves some cultural objects and traditions very carefully?

Ethnographic Museum

In 1986, today’s museum was located in a typical Elbasan house, that of the Sejdin family. The house was restored by the Institute of Cultural Monuments in 1983-1985 and in 1986 the premises of the house were adapted and turned into an ethnographic museum. The two floors of the museum:The first floor contains typical Elbasan furniture and consists of a corridor, a room for working with furs and metals. The second floor consists of the large corridor, the girls’ work room, the women’s room, the men’s room, as well as the bride’s room.

In the museum, the handcraft products made by different citizens of Elbasan are carefully preserved. Among them we find men’s and women’s suits. Men’s and women’s suits, made by talented Elbasan tailors, stood out for their special style and colors, made with expensive fabrics and embroidered with local artistic motifs. The tailors from Elbasan were among the best in Albania, where with their work they played an important role in the formation of the national characteristics of Albanian clothing.

Curiosity

Mark Sabidi’s tombstone, which proves the location of the city of Elbasan, is preserved in the museum.

Church of Saint Kolli

(Shelcan, Elbasan)

Those of you who have heard about the paintings of the great Albanian painter Onufri, it’s time to see them together. We show you where they are.The Church of Saint Kolli is famous for Onufri’s paintings. The church is one-story, with a paved square on the south and west sides. The church is entered from the western and southern sides. The church is of irregular stone slabs and roofed with unceilinged beams, restored in 1969.As for the time when it was built, based on the construction technique with two and three rows of horizontal bricks, it is thought that it should date to the end of the 16th century.

Elbasan Castle

Elbasan Castle, Roman origin and history with emperors. The field castle has Roman origins and this makes the interest to visit it very high from Albanians and foreigners. This magnificent castle, raised above the cobbled streets of the Egnatia empire, has been baptized by three prominent emperors in history over the course of 1,200 years. At the time of the Roman Empire, its construction became a source of well-being and prosperity. This, not only for Skampini, but for the whole province around, while at the time of the influx of peoples and their continuation, it turned into a cause of continuous misery. Our ancestors built the castles on the tops of flints protected by nature, while the Romans followed the principle: “Fortresses protect men, not walls!”. Throughout the length of Egnatia Street, you can see the monumental values and feel the authority of their power.

King Mosque

This mosque is preserved in a fairly good condition in its original form. It is also known as the Mosque of Sultan Bajaz and is one of the oldest in Albania. The period when it was built: It is said that it may have been built in 1492, but that has not been proven yet. For the time, it came second in line after the mosque built by Sultan Mehmet II, in 1464, when the Elbasan Castle was rebuilt. According to comparative data, the King mosque was built at the end of the 15th century. Its construction coincides with the time of Sultan Bayazit II, who built such mosques in the cities of Berat, Gjirokastër, Shkodër, etc.

Church of St. Vladimir

St. Vladimir’s Church is a cultural heritage monument of the first category. It has also been evaluated as one of the centers with very rare historical values.

The name of this church is associated with Saint Joan Vladimir.

The type of plan or construction belongs to the basilica, divided into three parts inside the church between two rows of pillars and two rows of columns. The hall measures 20×13. The altar area, or otherwise called the table where marriages take place, is separated by carved wood and icons on the wall. Parts of this wood carved with icons are preserved in the National Historical Museum. In the area where the priest performs various services, the late watercolor paintings are partially preserved. The floor is paved with thin stone tiles.

``SUMMER DAY” FEST

EVENTS AND ATTRACTIONS

The “Summer Day” is an Albanian spring festival for families and children celebrated in Albania on March 14. It is a pagan holiday that dates back to antiquity and has been preserved with great fanaticism to this day. Of course, from the beginning of its celebration until today, times have changed and consequently the way of celebration, but its basic form is the same, it has been and remains a pagan holiday, with Albanian origin and tradition and dedicated to the season of spring. The celebration is held in honour of the beautiful Albanian nature and vegetation that comes to life on this date.

On occasional of this day specific attention is dedicated for children’s activities for all day. So we see this activity mainly in perspective of children involvement. Every municipality made up their own plan of activity, but in general all have the same aim to make, full of activities for all family. Summer Day tends to be a massive celebration with its own rituals and features, with playful games, celebrations with the family, the unique decoration where flowers dominate, but also cakes like ballakume, which is also the characteristic cake for this day. Even though it has become a national holiday, Summer Day remains a traditional holiday of Elbasan, where they gather to celebrate with people from all over Albania.
